Aiming to reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
As a countermeasure against climate change, which is causing major disasters in many parts of the world, it is required to reduce CO₂ emissions while maintaining socioeconomic activities by 2050.
In order to face this global challenge, Ibaraki University has established the Carbon Recycling Energy Research Center (CRERC), a research team for carbon recycling using CO₂ in air as a resource, based on its extensive research achievements in fuel synthesis and fuel utilization, which have been highly evaluated both in Japan and abroad.
The only trinity research system in Japan integrated
CRERC has established the only research system in Japan that consistently handles three circulatory systems: "capture" CO₂ that causes global warming, "synthesize" it into fuel, and "utilize" it as energy. This is one of the major features of CRERC.

At Hitachi Campus in Ibaraki University
The Hitachi Campus in Ibaraki University, where CRERC's research is based, is a perfect environment for demonstrating carbon recycling, with its mountainous terrain and ocean views.
It is expected that this environment will be used to conduct research and development more adapted to real life, and that it will be firmly applied to urban development.
Therefore, CRERC members include experts in thermal engineering, thermal fluid engineering, polymer chemistry, applied and environmental microbiology, as well as transportation engineering and building environmental engineering.
In addition to measuring energy consumption from homes and businesses as a city block building model to weather data to determine which renewable energy sources are best suited for which situations, we are also conducting empirical research on how to create a carbon neutral city by introducing the "Hitachi-CO₂ Visualization System" in collaboration with the local government.
We are proud to say that we are one of the few teams in the world to conduct such interdisciplinary and socially-implementable research in this field.
CRERC is committed to building a safe and secure energy society in Hitachi City and sending acquired information from studies around the world.
