Establishment of the MSA-DAC Research Network

To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the development of effective carbon dioxide (CO₂) capture technologies is an urgent priority. In particular, direct air capture(DAC) technology requires innovations that reduce both energy consumption and cost. At the Carbon Recycling Energy Research Center, Ibaraki University, we are advancing research focused on the Moisture swing adsorption method—an approach aimed at minimizing energy use in atmospheric CO₂ capture. While our laboratory-scale studies have demonstrated the feasibility of this technology, further collaboration with industry is essential to reduce energy consumption at the bench scale and move toward real-world implementation. Broad adoption also requires engaging a wide range of companies from the early stages of research, sharing insights, and accelerating the path to deployment.

To this end, we are establishing the MSA-DAC Research Network, dedicated to exploring atmospheric CO₂ capture technologies using the Moisture swing adsorption method with the goal of minimizing energy consumption. The Network will work toward establishing research and development guidelines necessary for social implementation. Activities are scheduled to begin in mid-November.

The MSA-DAC Research Network will focus on three key themes to support energy-efficient development:

  1. Optimal water and heat management for the Moisture swing adsorption method
  2. Optimal adsorbent materials for the Moisture swing adsorption method
  3. Energy efficiency through lifecycle analysis, from manufacturing to utilization

We invite companies and organizations to join us in this collaborative effort to develop technologies essential for carbon neutrality. Details of the research network's activities are provided in the attached document. We encourage you to review the materials and consider participating.
